After spending 5 weeks in Cairo I finally have a plan and a departure date. Oct 1 I will be travelling to Iran- yeah! Just when I thought it was never gonna happen I received my authorization code from a 3rd party visa company. But before everything was legit, I had to dish out more cash, purchase a flight and provide a certificate of health stating I am disease free- does my reputation preceed me? Kidding ;)
So, my plans are to visit Iran, fly over to Nepal and finish in India. Unfortunately the Pakistan embassy doesn’t think I can hack it on my own being the helpless lone female that I am, so I have to skip across. This leg of my journey may be about 3 months, so it has been good hanging out in a place that feels like home. Speaking of home, as much as I miss my family and friends, the good/bad news is I hope to continue my travels into 2012. No, I am not moving to Egypt, but I am enjoying myself too much to come back to reality. I know you are not surprised...
Below are some random observations, random pics, and random video footage you may enjoy. Those of you who know me well will not be surprised to hear it took 6 months for me to learn how to use the video option on my camera- and only after Gasser showed me how.
Thinking of home but happily abroad,
Carrie
Random Observations:
-In the New Egypt it seems anything goes. Although drinking alcohol in a moving vehicle is not abnormal, I was a bit surprised to find my taxi driver drinking beer the other day.
-There used to be a time when I thought my sense of direction was pretty good. But in places like Cairo- where the streets do not follow any kind of grid pattern- I am completely useless. At some point I started regularly using the sun for direction, and I must admit I am pretty damn good at it.
-I am really good at playing dumb/naive/innocent- which is how I got into Syria when no one else could. My Turkish friend, after knowing me for only a few hours, said “I think you are crazy but smart”. I took it as a compliment.
-There is one thing I will never get used to...the long pinkie nail. Some men keep a long pinkie nail for digging in a variety of orifices. Gross.
-Fanta is not juice. Need I explain?
Here is a video shot from the back of Gasser's motorcylce:

But especially me, and by extension Canada :)
Gasser is the only one I trust to ride with in the streets of Cairo...
It is strange to see these shops when the public dress is so conservative. A lady in the street but a freak in the bed???
Jordan in his galabeya and me in my abeya (my uniform for Iran minus the headscarf). Flattering, non?
